About The Artist

Jean Baptiste Robie was a Belgian painter best known for his still life works—especially those depicting flowers. He followed the tradition of 17th century Dutch painters such as Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, but used a technique and color palette based in Neoclassical painters like Jacques-Louis David. Born on November 19, 1821 in Brussels, Belgium, he had a poverty-stricken childhood and had to work odd jobs to fund his art education at the Brussels Academy, where he studied under Balthasar Tasson. Robie went on to exhibit at both the Brussels Salon and the Paris Salon, winning a number of medals at each. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in St. Louis, the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others. Robie died on December 8, 1910 in Brussels, Belgium.
